Did You Know? Fun Halloween Facts for Kids!

1. Boo! Did you know Halloween started over 2,000 years ago? It began with a festival called "Samhain" (say it like "sow-in"), when people dressed up in costumes to scare away ghosts!

2. Pumpkin Fun! Carving pumpkins into funny or spooky faces is called a "jack-o'-lantern." People started carving turnips long ago, but now pumpkins are way more fun to carve.

Numerous new parents believe their child possesses extraordinary gifts. They often boast about their little one's early accomplishments, seemingly engaging in an unspoken competition. They involve their children in activities at increasingly tender ages to keep up with “The Jones’s baby.” But amid this fervor, the question remains: Are these children genuinely gifted? And is that a good thing in the long run?

Where did the traditional family go? You know, mom, dad, and 2.2 kids?

Growing up, I thought my sisters and I were in a "traditional" family. After all, my uncle's and aunt's families and neighbors' and friends' were structured like ours. With an average of four kids in the families surrounding us, obviously, I was not aware that there was an official definition of a traditional family.

Grandparents hold a special place in a child’s life, often passing down traditions, wisdom, and life skills. One of the most rewarding and practical skills you can teach your grandkids is cooking. Not only does it provide them with essential life skills, but it also strengthens your bond and creates lasting memories.

Grit! I love that word. Grit!

It sounds durable and tough. Grit. Just saying the word feels like a special kind of strength. No, it's not about how big your muscles are or how fast you can run, but about how we keep trying, even when things get hard. Kind of like a Crazy Glue that helps us stick with something until we finish it, no matter how hard it is!

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: It's a quiet evening, the light is dim, and you’re sitting in your favorite rocker chair with your grandchild snuggled up beside you. You open a beloved storybook, and as you begin to read, their eyes light up with wonder. These moments are not just about entertainment—they are almost priceless.

When our middle child was six months old, my dad used to shake his head from side to side while saying "yes" instead of nodding up and down for "yes" and side to side for "no." Some of the grandchildren found it curious, but our son, who even at that age knew the correct gesture, would cry. Grandfather immediately stopped his joke when he realized it could negatively impact the children's emotional development. Other fictitious stories adult children share include parents falsely claiming they were part Indian or mistakenly believing that the abbreviation "PA" stood for their father's town “pa” rather than Pennsylvania. While playing such harmless jokes on children may be fun, it can be challenging when they grow up believing these falsehoods to be true.
