The authors grew up in the family’s mom-and-pop store called Ratajack’s. The name is a simplified version of Ratajczak, the owner’s last name. Al Ratajczak’s mom, Maryanna, bought the land for her son in 1908.

Welcome to Jack’s Store by CJ Corki

Ratajack’s Store, North Chicago, IL

When WWI broke out in 1914, Al’s sisters Madaline, Kathryn, and Charlotte took the lead. The authors are the grandchildren of Charlotte, they started working in the business as soon as they could walk. It was from ordering the inventory, stocking the shelves, and marketing the wares that they learned how to manage a store. Jack, the adorable main character in The Marshmallow Mystery, is named after yet another shortened version of the family name RataJACK.

What People Are Saying

“I love love love the book.  I loved the pictures…It was really positive and gave a great message.”

— L. Bigalow

“We absolutely loved this adorable story, filled with fabulous illustrations! What wonderful life lessons of cooperation, interacting & working together to solve a “sweet” mystery! And a bonus to the story… all the factual information of different items throughout the story & a “find & seek” of items throughout the book!  Great teaching/learning skills for children to use! This book is Exceptional & highly recommended!”

— Tom B.

“The Marshmallow Mystery is a great read. My kids loved it and enjoyed the cute hook solving the mystery. Now they want a dog just like the one in the book. The can you find part of the book is really fun and it took our kids a while to find all the hidden things.”

- Dan

“I loved reading this book that was filled with beautiful landscape picture scenes. The book felt more "real/alive" with the full page illustrations. I particularly enjoyed the search and find aspect of the book where you search for a list of hidden items within the pictures. The storyline is original and unlike other children's books out there! I got an eBook and the hardcopy because I wanted to read it so soon. The hardcopy is a HUGE recommendation as it feels more personal.”

- B. Bingham

“While kids are mesmerized by a delightful tale of sweets, animals, and beloved family, they are learning how to think critically and use their different talents to work together and solve a problem. Having the option to find objects in the book, as well as the additional "Did You Know" at the end of the story, allows kids to interact with the book in different ways. The use of Open Dyslexic 3 font, makes the book accessible to readers who may struggle and helps them to build confidence and find joy in reading.”

- E. Rodgers

“Loved the story of teamwork and working together to solve a mystery. Finding all the hidden objects was fun to look for. The art is well done and the animal facts at the end is a nice touch. As someone who is Dyslexic I appreciate the font!”

- Joseph H.

“I can't wait to share this wonderful story about finding the best in each other with my grandchildren. Great message and an easy read. Job well done Corki's! :)”

- Mark C.

“As a school teacher I know how important it is to teach valuable lessons in life. This book did a great job of doing that. Even though you are different you still do an important part. Great book to read the beginning of the school year and even throughout.”

- Jessica

“Great Story and Lessons Learned. This book brings back many great childhood memories as I share it with the local school near me. The kids will love this story!”

- Mason

“This "Can You Find, Did You Know" Series is brilliant. Can't wait for the next book to be published.”

- Charlotte M.

“I liked the simple plot for young readers. I liked seeing the characters work cooperatively to solve a problem. I liked the end of the book 'bonus' items to explain some of the concepts. I also liked the use of the special font for dyslexic children. I am a 'grandma' who is currently ready to have my cataract surgery from ten years ago 'tweaked' and I found the font easier to read with my issues including astigmatism.
I was not fond of the amount of repetition in the pictures of the yard; a child might not notice such subtle differences on each page - some variety there would have been more interesting. But overall I love the story and especially the surprise ending! Who doesn't love a dog?! Well done ladies!”

- Beverly

“An imaginative and happy read for young and open minds in these darkened times. Parents and children will venture into a fun trip in this storybook. I highly recommend it for inquisitive minds (young and old).”

- Halric52

“I gave my twin grandchildren…since I wanted to get their individual reactions. One enjoyed it, could recite the morale of the story back, not bad for a 6 year old and talked about the garden animals at great length. The other surprised me, he LOVED it… The Can You Find idea you shared is great and can’t wait to see if I can find them…great for both grandparents and kids.”

— B. Baker

“Hi! I’m the Illustrator of this book and I just want to mention 3 things I loved about this story before I ever committed to being on the project:

1) Learning about the true life story of the man behind the all-knowing character of Grandfather and how he would create simple yet extraordinary moments of magic for his grandkids just by catering to their natural sense of play and wonderment.

2) The authors’ passions for creating a multi-layered children’s book that not only challenges both the child and parent but also teaches the importance of working together around a shared goal - like finding all the hidden marshmallows 😉

3) The authors’ desire to make this book highly accessible to as many kids as possible. The amount of consideration the author’s shared for all those who might have encountered their book was incredibly inspiring to say the least!”

— Danny

“My kids really enjoyed looking for clues in the illustrations. They wanted to read it all evening!”

- Jesse

“The Marshmallow Mystery book is an excellent read. As a grandparent, I appreciate how important it is to communicate with grandchildren. This book provides an easy and effective way to interact with grandkids that is enjoyable and has a message. From the plot of the book to the characters, CJ Corkie used just the right level of language, grammar and graphics to engage the young and old audience alike. Characters such as Jack the Teddy Bear, Kart, Quin, Zaba and others capture the imagination to enable both the senior reader and young listener to easily follow the mystery. I look forward to seeing more books directed at the underserved grandparent market.”
