Did You Know? Fun Halloween Facts for Kids!

Joseph from the Children's Book, "Don't Fear the Monster"

Halloween is full of fun traditions, from trick-or-treating to dressing up in silly costumes. Did You Know this…?

  1. Boo! Did you know Halloween started over 2,000 years ago? It began with a festival called "Samhain" (say it like "sow-in"), when people dressed up in costumes to scare away ghosts!

  2. Pumpkin Fun! Carving pumpkins into funny or spooky faces is called a "jack-o'-lantern." People started carving turnips long ago, but now pumpkins are way more fun to carve.

  3. Why Do We Say 'Trick or Treat'? A long time ago, kids would go door to door, offering to sing songs or tell jokes in exchange for treats. That’s how "trick or treat" got started!

  4. Candy Craze! People in the U.S. eat around 300,000 tons of candy during Halloween. That’s as much as 6,000 blue whales!

  5. Costume Time! Dressing up in costumes comes from the belief that wearing spooky outfits would confuse ghosts and keep them from bothering you!

What will your costume be this year?
