Grandma’s Wringer Washing Machine

What can you learn from Grandma’s wringer washing machine?

If there's one household appliance most of us could not do without, it's the washing machine. We all need to use them. Most of us use it at least once a week. We may have to drive to a laundromat, go down to the basement, or down the hall to complete the function of washing. We gather our dirty items and carry them judiciously to our laundry area, load the machine and entertain ourselves for 45 minutes before we move our items to the dryer. But the dryer will be a story for another day.

Broken Crayons Still Color

CRAYON: A stick of colored wax used for drawing on paper.

We are not a stick of wax, but not unlike a broken Crayon; people can be viewed or can view themselves as broken. In a way, we are all crayons, some with our wrappers peeled and others damaged from the impact of life in the crayon box. At times we may get broken, but we must never forget we all choose to continue to color the most vibrant of pictures essential to our quality of life. How NOT to be a toxic grandparent

News alert!

I was not a perfect parent! And guess what? There is no such thing as a perfect grandparent either!

I know, I know, that's shocking, but if we are going to take our role as intentional grandparents seriously, then we also must be confident and courageous enough to take our blinders off. Now, if you are like me, it has been a few years since we were actively parenting, and our memory is probably a little vague. At least mine is.

Pulling Forward Not Pushing Forward: How to Perpetuate your Family Values

As a youngster, I was raised in a family business, a mom-and-pop convenience store.  My mom started work at 5:30 am every morning, even on Christmas.  She brought in the newspapers, opened the cash registers for the day, and straightened the shelves to ensure everything was in order.  She would continue the day by waiting on the customers, restocking the shelves, ordering new inventory, and scheduling the other family members' work schedules since only family worked in the business.  Endless amounts of cash would go in and out of the store, trips to the bank for deposits, and stacks of bills to count.  As early as six years old, I would join her at the store to help before school.  Throughout my childhood, I learned our family's core values by working alongside my mother.

When a Matriarch Passes Away

While you were waking up today, someone else was taking their last breath.

I woke up today and my day started like any other; the gym, the obligatory dog walk, the never-ending conference calls, and cups of coffee…. Then, a quick peek at a text changed my next 72 hours and life forever. Someone died.

Insights from a 14-month-old

You are never to old to learn to walk…

As I watch my son and daughter-in-law prompt, cajole, and attempt to bribe my little 14-month-old grandchild to take those first steps by himself, I ask you, remember back when your child was first learning how to walk. Did you think that they would ever "get it?" Did you have a personal goal on when he would “do it?” I don't know about you, but I, too, tried everything in my power to influence and motivate.

Shhhh, mums, the word!

Confidence is underrated. So, let’ change that! What is confidence? The Oxford dictionary says it is "a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.” For this blog, we will refer to confidence as your specific lifetime experiences, best practices gathered, and legacy that only you bring to the table.
