The Spring Break of a Lifetime

Spring break is frequently associated with warm climate locations such as Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach, and Cancun, Mexico. It is typically attended by students partying regardless of participants' age or educational level. But Spring break can also be one of the best times to gather your grandkids and get them out of town, giving their parents a "Spring Break" of their own. With cold weather beginning to fade, everyone is eager to spend some time just relaxing and having fun in the sun. Whether your trip involves planes, trains, or automobiles, it's just the perfect time to get out and be together, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Skip-gen travel with only the grandkids and grandparents has become more common. Boomers are now planning a skip-gen vacation this year. And we all should, too! Give the kids a new memory and something to brag about to their friends when they go back to school, so head to a new place each year. Parents can certainly use a break from non-stop family togetherness and maybe a romantic getaway of their own. Kids have cabin fever from the monotony of virtual schooling and homebound routines. And for grandparents who've been isolated from family for a year, hugging the grandkids tops their wishlist.

After so much time apart, grandparents may be surprised at how much their grandkids have grown. I suggest a practice run before any big grandparent-grandkid vacation. Maybe spend a night in a nearby hotel, so everyone gets comfortable before the big adventure. Remember, you're traveling together to make new memories, but getting the grandkids involved with the planning is crucial. Collaborating with them can be part of the fun and help spark excitement in your favor. Try brainstorming dream vacations and destinations. Provide options and information about the specific trips and let them help choose the journey or the types of activities they want to do on vacation. Once your trip is arranged, you're on your way, relax and enjoy.

Of course, there are several options to consider when picking out this unique vacation adventure. Fresh air and open space are at a premium, and a visit to a national park for Spring Break fits in during these times. Hiking, wildlife viewing, and sharing the power of nature with the grandkids don't have to mean roughing it, either. Check out the country's national park lodges to combine majestic scenery with upscale creature comforts.

Consider a guided cruise which can take some of the pressure off the planning and logistics and provide company for grandparents and the grandkids. And cruises designed for families are also convenient, with planned tours and activities. A something-for-everyone, all-inclusive resort is another good option. Look for one that offers many planned activities for all ages and on-site childcare for the little ones.

Grandparents often carry the torch of family memories, and historical travel can be one of the best ways for them to pass the torch to a new generation. Grandparents can share memories and family history on trips retracing family roots to the old country or to places where ancestors lived when they first came to this country.

Whatever the choice, the opportunity for shared experiences, which many families seek, is the most important consideration. I see skip-gen vacations as a win-win for everyone. Grandparents get to create meaningful, bonding memories with their grandchildren, and while they're away, the parents get to play. It's funny how family travel has changed so much over the years, but the key then and now is still making memories together. How are you planning your next break?
