The Value of Boredom
Have you ever heard the dreaded, “I’m B-O-R-E-D!”
I have. As a matter of fact, to be totally transparent, I also said, “I’m B-O-R-E-D,” a time or two in my childhood.
Now, as adults, we don't want kids to sit around bored for hours but believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way to handle the situation.
Pins, Needles, and Rub-a-Dub
How did you use your allowance?
My hard-earned, coveted money wasn't easy to part with. Still, when I was 13, I took my allowance and went to the 5&10 store and bought a pair of knitting needles, a skein of yarn, and a pamphlet on how to knit, and I dove in. The first two projects in the booklet were 1) a headband (to learn the knit stitch) and 2) a triangular headscarf (to learn how to add and subtract stitches as well as use the purl stitch.
Mine…no MINE!
We haven't ever heard THAT said before, have we? Of course not! But if we are honest with ourselves, chances are that we can remember a time or two that we said it during our childhood. Be honest…I won't tell. After all, I, too, can vividly remember many times. One time, I invited my teddy bears, bunnies, stuffed animals, and coveted doll to my tea party. My sister decided my doll didn't need to be part of my elaborate festivity and was whisked away for another adventure.
In the Kitchen
I admit it…I love to cook. Spaghetti, fries, salmon and anything in between. Let’s get our grand babies excited about creating masterpieces in the kitchen.
Grandmother’s Apron: Did You Know?
Growing up in a Polish American house provided the opportunity for an array of Polish cuisine. From homemade Polish sausage and pierogi to my favorite dessert, potiza, pronounced (paw-tee'-tzah). I remember it as a tasty bread with a sweet, nutty filling. As I reminisce about my favorite foods and memories, I picture my mom and grandma cooking diligently for the family feast. My grandma with her house dress and my mom in her slacks, both adorned with an apron. This nostalgic look at the past had me thinking about the lost item used in cooking, aprons. What were they used for, and why are they no longer in everyday use?
Don’t Fear the Monster…anymore
What's your favorite part of Halloween? Pumpkin carving? Trick-or-Treating? Cooking s'mores over a fire?
S'mores, costumes, and the thrill of trick-or-treating, I love it all! I am so excited to have grandkids…mainly for the excuse to go trick-or-treating again!
Making Memories: Piles of Leaves, Piles of Smiles
Temperatures are cooling down; leaves are turning beautiful colors. There is a good chance you are already groaning at the thought of raking up those never-ending, car-size piles of leaves this fall—just another task on that checklist. Until now…you have grandkids!
One of the most significant parts of fall is all the fantastic leaves of different sizes, shapes, and textures.
Quarter Time: Teaching the Next Gen about Finance
Growing up, my parents taught their five daughters a lot about money. Since we worked in a family business, we were surrounded by bills and coins. My aunt would iron the crinkly bills to keep things in order and not even think about having them face in different directions, a big no-no. We would neatly and accurately count the piles of bills sorting them by ones, fives, tens, and twenties. Honesty and Integrity were a given. Although it might be tempting to pocket a few loose bills, we never did.
