The Power of Storytelling: How Reading Shapes Your Grandkids' Future
Once upon a time, in the year 2023, there lived a wise and spirited storyteller named Carma. She was known throughout the family for the captivating tales she shared with her grandkids and other children whenever she was around! The children would gather, their imaginations intertwined, forming friendships as they discussed and reimagined the tales long after Carma's words had faded.
Is that you too? Would you like this to be your legacy?
Storytelling has always been integral to human culture, passing down wisdom, knowledge, and values from one generation to another. As a grandparent, you and I have a unique opportunity to harness the power of storytelling to shape our grandkids' future and have a little family bonding time too.
The stories shared can be those of family history but let's not forget the simple act of reading. By reading a mere 900-word children's book like The Marshmallow Mystery, you can ignite the imagination of your grandkids, help them foster empathy, and enhance their language skills.
I did a little research and learned that in early child development, there is a significant benefit to developing language and literacy skills early. Let us first examine storytelling as an effective holistic learning tool. According to psychologist and Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Roger W. Sperry, storytelling has an amazing power: stimulating both sides of your brain; it stimulates creativity while stimulating logical thinking skills simultaneously - engaging both cognitive faculties and imaginative capabilities simultaneously when read aloud by grandparents for grandchildren! Reading together during their formative years is integral to shaping academic and personal success. Think about it: something as simple as providing your grandkids with reading material will aid their literacy and create an atmosphere encouraging a passion for knowledge-gathering and acquisition. I know that sounds like academic gobbly-gook, so let's break it down into layman's, aka grandparents' terms.
Let's talk first about the awesome unicorn with a fiery mane!
Relax, relax…this is how our grandkids' minds work…every day. Your grandkids are continually using their imagination. Sorry, I am going to take a little tangent. Do you remember the Disney movie Mary Poppins Returns (2018)? Mary Poppins returned to the Banks children, who are now all grown up, and found they had "forgotten what it's like to be a child." They lost touch with the magic and wonder of their childhood. Mary Poppins reminds them of the importance of reconnecting with their inner childlike imagination and belief in the extraordinary.
So, it's our job to help our grandchildren navigate unfamiliar worlds and can gently prompt them to ask thought-provoking questions, draw logical connections and imagine alternative scenarios.
Let's encourage and celebrate theirs and keep our childlike imagination alive. How? Here are eight benefits to reading:
1. Endless Adventures: When reading a book, their imagination takes flight. When the words on the page are read with emotion and excitement, there are no limits to the adventures they can embark upon. They will be in the garden with Jack. They will worry that the marshmallow bush is empty. They will be in the backyard, transforming an ordinary day into an extraordinary escapade.
2. Problem-Solving Superpowers: Believe it or not, your child's imagination is a secret weapon against everyday problems. Playing pretend or creating imaginary scenarios, they develop problem-solving skills that would make Sherlock Holmes proud. With or without a magnifying glass, they "Can Find" the hidden objects in the books. They may even dream up an alternative solution.
3. Laughter: You've seen your grandkids burst into giggles for no apparent reason. It's because their imagination is tickling their funny bone! I have seen kids give out a raucous laugh when Zaba, our Toad, makes himself big to look like a monster in the bonfire's glow! That was not the effect we intended when writing this book, but a kid's imagination serves up a hearty portion of daily happiness and fun.
4. Cultivating Empathy: Imagination is not just about dreaming up magical lands; it's also a bridge to empathy. When your grandkids engage in imaginative play, they put themselves in each of the different characters' shoes, experiencing their emotions and understanding different perspectives. So, if they decide to wear a cape to the grocery store, remember—they're not just pretending to be a superhero; they're practicing the superpower of empathy.
5. Creativity: Picasso, Shakespeare, and Mozart have nothing on your grandchild's creative genius! Their imagination fuels their artistic expression, allowing them to create masterpieces with crayons and to tell tales that make your jaw drop. Embrace the messiness of their creative endeavors and watch their imagination bloom into something truly magical. Of course, giving them the Funtastical Activity Journal: Draw or Write Stuff for Ages 4-8 Years Old (Can You Find, Did You Know Series) is a fun tool to spark some ideas!
6. Language and Communication Skills: Storytelling through books is an entry to their language development. Your grandkids absorb new vocabulary, sentence structures, and linguistic patterns as you read aloud. Engaging in conversations about the story enhances their communication skills, expands their vocabulary, and improves their comprehension. Please encourage them to ask questions, make predictions, and express their thoughts about the story. Remember to share the Did you know facts at the end of the book and send them back into the pages to search for the Can You Find items. Can you find all the marshmallows? Or how about s'more?
7. Cognitive Skills: Reading stimulates cognitive abilities such as memory, concentration, and critical thinking. The narrative structure of stories helps children learn to organize information, follow sequences, and make connections between cause and effect. As you read with your grandkids, encourage them to analyze the plot, identify patterns, and solve problems presented in the story. This powerful skill learned early, will benefit them in various areas of their lives.
8. Lifelong Love for Learning: You lay the foundation for a lifelong passion for learning by nurturing a love for reading in your grandkids. Reading opens the doors to endless knowledge and cultivates a curious and inquisitive mind. It exposes them to various topics, expands their horizons, and encourages them to explore new ideas and possibilities.
As a grandparent, you possess the remarkable ability to shape your grandkids' future through the power of storytelling and reading. By reading to them and instilling an early love of reading, we are creating brighter futures for future generations - take advantage of its potential by unlocking all your grandchild's full potential! And let's face it—life is just a little more magical when you see it through the eyes of a child with an imagination that knows no bounds!
So, grab a book, find a cozy corner, and embark on a magical journey with your grandkids—one that will shape their future in beautiful, profound ways. Be like Carma and have your legacy lives on.
