The Grandmother Who Led with Strength, Wit, and an Iron Will

A Father’s Playful Proclamation
“Men and women aren’t equal; women are better,” my dad would often proclaim with a mix of pride and playful irony. It was a stance he had to adopt, considering the formidable women who ruled his world—not only five intensely strong-willed daughters who each brought their unique spark to the family but also a family business led by a powerful matriarch, my grandmother.
The Powerful Women Who Shaped Our World
I never had the pleasure of meeting the original matriarch, Maryanna, who had laid the groundwork for our family legacy, but the vibrant, blue-haired powerhouse that was my grandmother was a force to be reckoned with. She kept everyone on task, her sharp eyes missing nothing.
Meet Grandma: A Force to Be Reckoned With
Since her house was physically connected to the family business through a narrow passageway, there was no evading Grandma’s watchful oversight. Her sturdy, “strong like bull” physique would command the register during her shifts, and she would often let out a stream of Polish dialogue to avoid nosy customers. This secret language also served as a code she shared with her children since her grandchildren were blissfully unaware of the true nature of her words.
The Watchful Guardian of Family and Business
In addition to her management oversight, she orchestrated the family meals, which were delightful feasts of hearty Polish fare. Dishes like Pierogi, the delectable dumplings typically stuffed with tangy sauerkraut and earthy mushrooms, filled the air with mouthwatering aromas, alongside kielbasa, the richly smoked sausages, often made from the finest pork sourced from the neighborhood butcher.
A Mastermind in the Kitchen and Beyond
Her mild-mannered husband was quiet, steadfast support, dutifully fulfilling her requests for family or business needs. He also took on the role of backup chauffeur for the family, ensuring that the women, the central workers in their bustling business, could focus on their responsibilities without worry.
The Silent Strength of a Supportive Partner
But her resilience had the most significant impact on me. I admired how she dealt with adversity and remained calm under pressure. One particular incident occurred during a robbery, which was, unfortunately, a more frequent occurrence than we liked, given the amount of cash handled at the time. At gunpoint, she emptied the cash register drawer to give to the thief. However, what he didn’t know was that when he was distracted by checking his surroundings, she tucked the larger bills into her ample bra. This way, she could later show him that the drawer was truly empty, allowing him to make off with only a small portion of the contents. He was also unaware of the stash of cash hidden in a cigar box under the counter.
Resilience in the Midst of Adversity
She was not only clever but also strong-willed. A vivid memory I will never forget is when she said her leg had fallen asleep. Concerned, my mom took her to the doctor, who immediately admitted her to the hospital. When we visited her, I sat on the bed and was mortified to see that her leg was now missing. She had developed a blood clot that had reached a critical, life-threatening point, and the removal of her leg saved her life.
A Life-Changing Loss, A Testament to Strength
What astonished me was how she bounced back from this devastating situation. She was fitted with a prosthetic leg and needed to undergo physical therapy. She had to learn to walk again. Not only did she walk, but she also raced around the small kitchen table faster than most women her age could manage with two legs. Her strength and determination were truly an impactful lesson of resilience.

The Value of Education: A Grandmother’s Vision
Charlotte, or Lottie as she was called in her childhood, was not well educated. However, she was a force to be reckoned with as a successful business owner. She insisted on her grandchildren’s college education. She often took us downtown Chicago, where she and my grandfather would stroll along Michigan Avenue. She in a mink hat while my grandfather sported a fedora. Then, they would take us in their blue Lincoln Continental to the poorer side of town, introducing us to the homeless. She would say, “See what happens if you don’t go to college?” Thanks to the family’s success and support, we all could attend.
A Legacy of First-Generation College Graduates
Upon her passing, she had already endured multiple strokes that left her partially paralyzed and reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. Two decades after the family made the decision to sell the business, she managed to leave behind a profound legacy in education. It was through her unwavering dedication and the family’s selfless sacrifices, pouring their hearts and resources into the family business, that they were able to make a significant impact on the lives of so many of us as first-generation college graduates.
A Lasting Impact That Transcends Generations
Her story is a testament to the strength, resilience, and legacy of the women who led our family. The powerful women who ruled our world shaped our values, our successes, and our determination. In the end, my dad was right—women weren’t just equal. In many ways, they were better.
