The Fire Princess and her Secret Realm

Did you ever meet a fire princess?

Some of you might think that meeting a fire princess might be easier to do as a child, but I didn't have the opportunity to meet one until I was well into my 20s. She appeared unexpectedly one evening, and I quickly learned a fire princess could always be called upon.

Now, I don't remember ever seeing her while growing up. She may have been hidden in plain sight or maybe didn't appear until after the kids were born but appear she did. And she enchantingly emerged for each of the seven grandkids and the five sisters.

What made her so special? Well, her magical powers occurred as she danced in the fire pit flames at grandfather's house. She could entice and engage our imagination and creativity with a simple whisp of a flame. Her skill? Using grandfather as the conduit, she painted a picture of a parallel universe, unique beasts, and challenges that needed to be faced and won. She confidently overcame every encounter she faced, and she would engage others to help win her battle.  We willingly joined in the fight.

Our fire princess was not the only imaginary character we encountered. The events at grandfather's house are legendary. There was always something that sparked each kid's imagination, activities that challenged the status quo and often allowed everyone to look at the world differently.

The legend of the fire princess is just one of the tales magically created by our dad, the wise and powerful spirit of legend and legacy. He was a master storyteller. Professionally trained as a machinist, you might not think that was a career that prepared you for the skill of storytelling, but he taught us that there is a storyteller in each of us, regardless of your background. Just take a breath and look at your surroundings with awe and innovation, and the stories will emerge.

The fire princess was just one of his many stories, all steeped in mythology and symbolism that mesmerized us all.

Since our fire princess's initial appearance, she became a significant figure in the evening narratives. After dinner, we would all rush out to the fire pt. As the sun set, our dad would fuel the fire with the traditional wood, but as the flames and sparks began to fly, the fire princess appeared.

Each sister and grandkid would probably tell a different story about what she looked like and what message she was sharing, but everyone saw her and felt her power.

The impact of our unique fire princess has been far-reaching and long-lasting. Her appearance has helped shape the narrative of many of our books and has provided a platform for other grandfather tales. We hope that she inspires you as you become your family storyteller.
