From Grandmother’s Kitchen to Facebook: Our 8th Annual Easter Lamb Cake Competition

Ba-ah-ah-bies

Easter is just around the corner, and in our family, that means one thing: Lamb Cakes. For as long as I can remember, the Easter Lamb, has been the centerpiece of our Easter celebration, a sweet symbol of spring and new beginnings. Growing up in a Polish American household, the lamb cake (aka Baranek Wielkanocny) wasn't just a dessert; it was a multi-day event that signaled the end of Lent and the start of a massive celebration.

The Legend of Grandmother’s Kitchen

My mother didn't have fancy silicone molds or high-tech ovens; she had a heavy, two-piece cast iron lamb mold that looked like it belonged in a blacksmith’s shop. Her ritual was always the same: carefully greasing every nook and cranny of the ears and nose, followed by a precise dusting of flour. If the ears stuck, the holiday was practically ruined! I remember standing on a wooden stool, watching her mix the batter. Soon, the whole house would be filled with that unmistakable, warm hug of golden sugar as the cake baked to perfection.

Decorating was a meticulous family affair. We used shredded coconut for the "wool," tiny chocolate chips for the eyes, a single clove for its nose and always—always—a vibrant red ribbon tied around the neck.

8 Years of Friendly (and Floury) Rivalry

As the years went by and our family grew, we realized we couldn't all fit in Grandmother’s kitchen anymore. The extended family bean…cousins moved away, siblings started their own homes, and the tradition risked becoming a distant memory. But instead of letting it fade, we turned it up a notch.

This year marks the 8th Annual Lamb Cake Competition! What started as an Easter Centerpiece, then a friendly rivalry between my sisters and me over who could make the "cutest" lamb, has blossomed into a full-scale family phenomenon.

Because we are no longer all living "next door" to one another, we’ve had to adapt. We’ve fully embraced the era of modern social media to keep the spirit alive. All the judging and voting now takes place on Facebook, allowing family and friends from across the country to participate. It’s our digital Easter dinner table.

The Secret Ingredient: The Pound Cake Hack

Over the last eight years, we’ve learned some hard lessons. The biggest one? Not all cakes are created equal.

The Pro-Tip of the Year: If you want your lamb to survive the decorating process and the car ride to brunch, use a pound cake mix. Why? Because pound cake is structurally superior. It’s dense, sturdy, and has the "heft" needed to hold the intricate details of a mold. It creates a solid foundation that doesn't crumble when you're trying to wedge a toothpick into the neck. Speaking of which... don't forget the toothpicks! A well-placed toothpick in the neck is the difference between a prize-winning lamb and a tragic heap of crumbs on the platter.

The 8th Annual Competitive Categories

To keep things spicy, we’ve introduced four official categories. Our participants aren't just baking; they are strategizing. Here is what our brave bakers are aiming for:

1. Most Traditional

Lion Safari Lamb

This is for the purists. We are looking for the "Grandmother Standard." This category requires a classic white lamb, perfectly groomed coconut wool, a red ribbon, and a serene expression. It must look like it belongs in a 1950s Polish bakery window. Precision is everything here.

2. Most Likely to Make You Laugh

Le-ham the Lamb

Easter is a time of joy, and sometimes that joy comes from a lamb cake that looks slightly... unhinged. Whether it’s a "Cookie Moster Cake" with googly eyes or a lamb that looks like it’s had one too many espresso shots, this category celebrates the hilarious side of baking fails (and intentional comedy).

3. Lamb Cake through the Ages

CleoBAAtra the lamb of the Nile

This is our most ambitious category yet. A creative category that dares you to bake beyond the pasture. From honoring ancient traditions to imagining the "Space Sheep" from the year 3000, this is your chance to push the boundaries of the classic lamb cake. Whether you're inspired by history or the stars, the sky—and time—is the limit.

4. The Wild Card

The Lord takes care of his lost lamb

This is the "anything goes" zone. To win the Wild Card, you have to think outside the box—and potentially outside the kitchen. We’re talking unique materials, non-edible entries, and definitely no lamb molds allowed. You could build a lamb out of LEGOs, or knit one from wool. We have even had a real lamb, yes, a real lamb, in this category.  If it’s out of the ordinary and not made of pound cake, it belongs here.

How to Join the Fun and Vote

This is where you come in! New lamb’s will be entered, and we’ve opened the voting up to our extended circle because, let’s be honest, the more the merrier.

Here is how you can help:

  1. Feast Your Eyes: Scroll through the gallery of this year's entries.

  2. Analyze the Craftsmanship: Is the "Caveman Lamb" truly primitive?

  3. Cast Your Vote: Head over to our Facebook page and "vote" for the photo of the lamb you think deserves the crown in each category.

Why We Do It

At the end of the day, it’s not really about who wins the ribbon. It’s about the fact that even though we’re spread out, we’re all smelling that same sweet vanilla aroma at the same time. It’s about the text messages asking, "Did your ears stay on this year?" and the photos of kids covered in frosting.

It’s a celebration of heritage, a tribute to the grandmothers who taught us that food is the ultimate love language, and a way to ensure that our Polish roots stay firmly planted, no matter where we live.

So, take a look, pick your favorite, and help us crown the champion of the 8th Annual Lamb Cake Showdown! Winners will be posted on April 5th, Easter!
