Celebrating Easter: Faith, Family, and Friendly Competition
Carlie and Shannon with “The Silence of the Lamb Cake”
Easter is a time of faith, renewal, and cherished family traditions. For my family, it's more than just a holiday—a beautiful blend of spiritual reflection, joyous celebrations, and a touch of friendly competition! From the Polish Catholic tradition of blessing Easter baskets to our long-standing Easter egg hunt (yes, even for my grown children!) and our beloved Lamb Cake competition, Easter in our home is a time of laughter, love, and meaningful moments.
Blessing the Easter Baskets
One of my favorite Easter traditions is the blessing of the Easter baskets, a practice rooted in Polish Catholic heritage. Every Holy Saturday, we carefully prepare our baskets filled with symbolic foods—decorated eggs representing new life, bread for sustenance, meats and butter to celebrate abundance, and something sweet to remind us of the joy of the Resurrection. We then bring our baskets to church for a special blessing before enjoying the meal together on Easter morning after Mass. It's a meaningful way to honor our faith and share in a ritual that connects us to generations before us.
This tradition has remained a constant in our Easter celebrations, no matter where life has taken us. It brings a sense of peace and reverence to the holiday, reminding us of the deeper meaning behind Easter. Even as my children have grown, they still appreciate the significance of this blessing, and I love seeing them carry forward the tradition with the same enthusiasm.
The Timeless Easter Egg Hunt
Some traditions never grow old, no matter how old my children get! The Easter egg hunt has always been a highlight of our celebrations, starting when my children were young and continuing well into their 20s. Each year, I delight in hiding eggs, watching their excitement as they search, and sharing in the laughter that inevitably follows. It doesn't matter how grown-up they are—once the hunt begins, they turn into kids again, running around the house or yard in search of their hidden treasures.
And, without fail, we always find a stray chocolate egg months after Easter—tucked away behind furniture or hidden so well that even I forget where I put it! It's become an unintentional part of the tradition, adding a little surprise sweetness long after the holiday has passed. Sometimes, we joke about keeping track of how many missing eggs we find throughout the year!
The Legendary Lamb Cake Competition
Perhaps the most competitive (and entertaining) of our Easter traditions is the annual Lamb Cake competition. Every year, family members put their decorating skills to the test, transforming simple lamb-shaped cakes into edible works of art. Some turn out beautifully, while others… well, let's just say they have "character"! The friendly rivalry, the laughter, and the creative (sometimes hilarious) results make this tradition one of the most anticipated parts of our Easter celebration.
There's always plenty of good-natured teasing about whose cake looks the best (or the worst). Some years, we have beautifully frosted, picture-perfect lambs, while other times, we end up with lopsided or slightly melted ones that look more like abstract art than a cake! No matter the results, we all enjoy the fun of decorating and, of course, indulging in a slice afterward.
Easter: A Celebration of Love and Tradition
For me, Easter is about more than just traditions—it's about the love we share as a family, the faith that grounds us, and the joy of creating memories together. Whether it's the reverence of the Easter basket blessing, the playfulness of an egg hunt, or the laughter of a Lamb Cake competition, these moments bring us closer and remind us of the season's true spirit.
As Easter approaches, I look forward to carrying on these traditions again, knowing they will continue to bring joy for years. I cherish these moments for the fun they bring and the sense of togetherness they foster. May your Easter be filled with faith, family, and plenty of sweet moments—whether in the form of chocolate eggs (even months later!) or a slightly lopsided Lamb Cake!
